OQO prototype shown with Intel’s Atom inside
Engadget – Before you get too riled up here, let us point out that this Atom-based OQO is simply a prototype. According to the company’s Dennis Moore, the device we’re seeing here “is not a product launch or announcement,” but simply a demonstration of just how amazing and utterly life-changing the OQO + Atom combo is. Really guys, if there’s so much love in the house, why not get this thing on the production line? Continue reading

Dell’s Subnotebook To Ship With Ubuntu
Slashdot – k33l0r writes “Dell’s entry into the sub-notebook market, the Inspiron 910, will ship with Ubuntu preinstalled. This was confirmed this morning when Gizmodo published (leaked) specifications for the Inspiron 910.” I hope that’s not the final form of the keyboard, though — lots of wasted space on each side.

Strange Paths to Multiple Medals

Visual Search Engine Tracks Stolen Images
Slashdot – Barence writes “A new visual search engine could help photographers keep track of their photographs whenever, and wherever, they appear on the internet. The TinEye search engine allows users to search by uploading a picture rather than typing in a keyword. It then conducts a pixel by pixel search across the internet, flagging up all instances of that image even if it’s been cropped, merged or digitally altered in some way.”

Secure File Storage Over Non-Trusted FTP?
Slashdot – hmckee writes “Does any software exist that enables me to store/backup/sync files from my local computer to a non-trusted FTP site? To accomplish this, I’m using a script to check timestamps, encrypt and sign the files individually, then copy each file to an offsite FTP directory. I’ve looked over many different tools (Duplicity, Amanda, Bacula, WinSCP, FileZilla) but none of them seem to do exactly what I want: (1) multi-platform (Windows and Linux),” Continue reading

History Proves the iPhone Will Never Win the Handheld Gaming Wars
Gizmodo – Super Monkey Ball is arguably the current zenith of iPhone tilt gaming. The gameplay involves navigating your bebubbled monkey through a series of elevated, edgeless mazes without letting him fall—it’s fun, if repetitive. Nintendo’s Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble is similar: The player guides Kirby through mazes using tilt-sensitive control, collecting stars along the way. Both games are entertaining, and both won positive reviews for nearly identical control schemes. So why is Monkey Ball getting all the attention?

Mac Rumors – PhoneNews claims that Apple is preparing to release a new version of the MacBook Air imminently. Logitech Snaps up Ultimate Ears, Chasing this “Portable Audio” Market we’ve Heard so Much About
Engadget – Logitech is getting into the earbuds game, announcing today that it’s buying privately-held Ultimate Ears. Historically focusing on spendy in-ear monitors for live musicians, Ultimate Ears has recently hit the earbud game with full force, and Logitech seems to want a piece of that action. Plus the acquisition price of $34 million is like, what, profits from your last seven minutes of iPod dock sales, Logitech? Logitech and Ultimate Ears expect the deal to close in August.
