Hi,
I have a Gateway desktop that is about 9 years old.  It has windows xp on it. It has been running really really slow for about two years now.  I haven't got an updated version but the PD Doctor version that came with it I ran,  but when I ran the extended Hard drive test, it says three things:
1. Funnel seek test Failed
2. Surface scan test Failed
3. Linear seek test Failed.
I am no computer guru, what do they mean?  The computer works ok for what we use it for (kids to play preschool internet games) but is it eventually going to crash? I took anything valuable off it long ago. Would be expensive to fix? I thought the problem was originally virus's so I called about having it cleaned up and it was estimating at about $200!  I will go buy a cheap knock off for that amount.  Please give me some guidance. I am little attached to this old computer, it was the first item we ever bought. So if I can save it for the kids to bang around on that would be great.

kristen,

These failures indicate you hard disk is getting ready for the big dumpster in the sky.

The good news is is should not be very expensive to fix. A new hard drive and the labor to put it in shouldn't be much more than a hundred bucks.
