We bought a HP mini netbook as a second computer just for e-mail and Skype. It is painfully slow - and I have removed 8 programs such as games, java, Microsoft Works, etc.  It's still slow. I'm down to a couple of removal options.
If I drop Microsoft NET Framework 2.- Svc Pack 2 (185 mb) and
Microsoft NET Framework 1.0 Svc Pack 2 (179 mb) I save a lot but they sound too important.
Otherwise - I can relace AVG 8.5 which is about 55 mb with Windows Live One Care, only 35 mb. Or is it just hopeless??  Did HP put out a lemon that looks small and cool but can't perform?

tom77,

Netbooks are not speed demons but certainly should be able to do email and skype without much problem.  HP, as a general rule, makes some pretty good stuff.

Leave the .NET stuff alone.  Removing that could cause you some grief. I wouldn’t worry so much about the size of the program but what processes are running in the background.  AVG real time file and link scanning would be my first suspects.  These are great, if you have the extra horsepower to do these tasks in the background but can slow things down if there is not enough CPU to go around.

Try configuring AVG not to do real time scanning, or even disable it temporarily and see what impact that has on performance.
