Title: Win7 freezes randomly
Post by: Trillz0r on January 12, 2014, 01:46:08 am
Hello! I hope this is the right place for a kind of post like this.

A couple of months ago my Win7 pc started freezing randomly, usually while browsing in Chrome (but I tried switching to Firefox to no avail), but also while doing other things, like working in Excel. No crash logs are produced, also no critical event logs. The whole thing just freezes and ctr+alt+del doesn't work. The only thing I can do is reboot my pc. So far I've tried:

I'm kind of reluctant to bring it back to the shop, thinking it's the motherboard (?) because I thought pc-doctor would be able to tell me if it were, and I don't want to be computerless for all that time if there are other tests I could do myself. Are there?

System info in attachment.

Hi Trillz0r,

Sorry for the delayed response. I have looked through it, but the information you provided doesn't tell me much.

Unfortunately, the issues you are experiencing could be caused by any number of issues, it could be memory, the motherboard, drivers, or even a HDD issue. To rule out hardware issues, I would recommend running more in-depth testing with our software. Additional tests are available under "Diagnostics" icon in the middle section of Toolbox (if you are using another product please let me know). If you scroll through the list you will have the ability to run tests against each set of components individually. These tests are more thorough than the preconfigured system tests, and may find issues that an initial scan did not.

On a final note, I am sorry to say that we can only offer support related to the installation and use of PC-Doctor computer hardware diagnostic products. For general PC questions, you should contact the maker of your PC or the device you have questions about.

Please let me know if you have any issues with our software, or have any other questions.

Thanks,
Kris

^^ Thanks for the reply.

Just in case someone stumbles on this while googeling: I *think* I fixed it. Due to the coincidence of finding out that my external HD kept disconnecting while connected to my usb 3.0 port, I started searching for the reason why. Turns out windows 7 has troubles supporting usb 3.0 - but my mouse was plugged into a usb 3.0 port as well!
Now that I moved it to a regular USB 2.0 port I have yet to encounter the freeze.

This doesn't really explain why my keyboard would be unresponsive as well, but it's something, right?

PS: I though that was what the pc doctor toolkit was for: in depth hardware checks? I ran every check available from the toolkit...

I am glad you figured out the issue, and that is definitely not a problem that I had thought of.

Regarding our software, while we do have USB testing available, its primary function is to test that the ports and devices function properly. Currently we are unable to determine if the OS is causing a problem with the device, but I will bring this issue to a couple of the developers and see if it is something we can, or already are working on. I also imagine that Microsoft will probably provide a patch for Windows at some point in the near future if the root cause of the issue is the OS itself.

Thanks for the update, and let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Kris
